The Internet of Things (IoT)
Most people think that IoT is a new concept, but it first showed its hand back in the 1970s. Today, the internet of things continues to undergo various changes. It is no longer in its infancy stage as was earlier presumed. In fact, research by the IDC revealed more than eighty-six billion dollars going into IoT development in 2017 alone.
So what areas are experiencing some of the biggest changes within the IoT sector?
1: Application Programming Interfaces (APIs)
IoT offers endless possibilities to APIs as a result of its ability to connect many discrete things into one giant and powerful network. As a result, a lot of sound strategies are in place to help the API industry to tap into the Internet of things successfully. APIs function as a bridge between raw data and the actual machines and as such, IoT desperately depends on them. By exposing all available raw data, the internet of things become not only seamlessly connected but also all previously unseen possibilities get brought to light.
2: Security
As devices become more connected by the day, more and more people start to worry about how secure the connection is between the internet of things and, more specifically, the raw data required. Manufacturers all over the world pay a lot of attention to security feature when building interlinked devices. These days, a multi-layered approach to solving the security problem is in the place where the hardware, the firmware, and stored data get separately protected. Companies such as Apple already use this method while securing all their devices.
3: Platforms
IoT platforms continue to receive a lot of attention especially in 2017. The reason behind this increased attention is because a good IoT platform must do the following functions easily.
- Connect thousands of devices at once.
- Collect a huge amount of data
- Handle a large number of vendors at once
To that effect, a lot of programmers realise the need to create a more stable platform that exhibits cognitive security features, privacy, as well as a closed loop automation process. A lot of emphasis gets put into the development of a good IoT platform because its incorporation will redefine the way we do business completely.
